February at STEM Accelerator

We had a busy month in February! Half-term meant another round of exciting STEM activities, including two NEW offerings (work experience, and robotics)! We also headed out to Adastral Park for BT’s High Apprenticeship evening, and had great fun at Ipswich’s second Raspberry Jam!

Lowestoft STEM school

Lowestoft STEM school panorama

Our second STEM School week at Lowestoft was a wonderful range of engineering, electronics and sports.

Local STEM businesses, including Anglian Water, Opito, and GeoTherm, delivered some great sessions, and Cambridge Science Centre came for the day to help students build a chain reaction machine (and rescue an inflatable duck from certain doom!).

Students also got to try their hand at soldering (while making their own torch) and learnt all about sports science.

Here’s what some of our students had to say about the week:

“I enjoyed every session”

“It was very fun and would love to do it again”

“I found [electronics] very interesting and I will remember it for a long time”

The week was also covered by the Lowestoft Journal!

We’re now busy on working on our next STEM school at Lowestoft, to be held in easter break – 4th-8th April. Watch this space for more info, or sign up to our mailing list for updates on new activities on your area!

Robotics days – NEW!

We also introduced a new activity during half-term at UCS Ipswich – two days of robotics.  Students got the chance to get hands on with coding (through a fun RPG-style game); and try out our robotic arm, maze-running robot, and even a walking robot!

Work Experience – NEW!

This February, we rolled out our work experience offering, and welcomed our first intern. We are looking to recruit even more students for our Research and Development Internship, so click on our work experience page to find out more about our next enrollment (4th-8th April).

Out and about in Suffolk

The STEM Accelerator team are often out and about in Suffolk, and February found us at the BT Apprenticeship evening, Chooseday Tuesday at Ormiston Denes school, and we had a great time at the Ipswich Raspberry Jam: wonderful talks, robots, and lots of gadgets – there were even mind-controlled cars!

Coming up in March

We’ll be at the Your Future Careers Fair at West Suffolk College on 22nd March. So if you’re coming along – stop by and say “Hi”!

We’re rolling out our latest offering: Taster sessions for schools! Teachers – click here to find out how your school can get involved.

We’ll be back at Ormiston Denes, this time with our virtual reality demonstration.

Other events

30th March – Microsoft Build Extended event at Adastral Park – includes live streaming of Microsoft keynote speeches in San Francisco.
